Chile was hit by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake and killed hundreds of people on March 1, 2010, and according to NASA it also changed the length of the Earth’s day, which is now shorter by 1.26 microseconds.

NASA says that Chile’s massive earthquake altered the distribution of the Earth’s overall mass, which affected the length of our day.

And this was not the first time that this has happened. In 2004, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia and shortened the length of our day by 6.8microseconds

Scientists say that a good explanation of this is that every time a massive earthquake happens it causes Earth to rotate faster which makes each day shorter.
