Being a member of the OHHS swim team can be very hectic. Between early morning practices on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and swim meets on Saturdays, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication.
I had a chance to interview the team captain Christa Kamon. Christa has been swimming since she was four years old, but has only been swimming on teams during the summer and for the last four years for Oxon Hill. Christa swims a 200 yard IM (individual medley) which is when four girls swim 50′s of every stroke including backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle. Christa’s favorite part about being a part of the swim team is “right after a race when I get to cut my time and get to see the effects of my hard work.” Also “the feeling when I dive off the block and enter the water. Being completely submerged in water, not being able to hear anything but my heart beat, not fighting the water but relaxing in it….it’s peaceful” she says.
As her team’s captain Christa has several responsibilities. With so many underclassmen on the team it’s important for her to maintain a high level of school and team spirit. She has to set an example even when her team may not be performing well. Although the swim team might not have the top record, they are making progress and demonstrating true Clipper Pride by continuing to compete and to give their all.

Christa is wack. Sike, just kidding. Christa is an AMAZING multi-sport athletes and one of my best friends! Go Christa! Whoo!
