Oxon Hill’s Boys’ and Girls’ swim teams competed in the Maryland Public School Athletic Association 4A/3A Central Regional Championship. They were able to swim up near the top of the chain, clinching 6th place in the girls’ team rankings and 5th in the boys’ in a meet with thirteen other schools. The meet took place on Saturday, February 20th.
The girls’ team earned a total of 157 points and the boys’ team earned a total of 188. Individually, plenty of the swimmers finished in great time in their seeds.
Reina Pate had the best showing, coming in second in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle events.
An interview with seniors Christa Kamon and Sean Woods provides an insider’s view on how regionals went.
“I like counties and well, regionals took a lot more than regular meets because it’s really official and you feel good about yourself, even if your times suck,” says Kamon.
Coming in first in her heat in the women’s 100 yard breaststroke, Kamon says she did awful overall. “I got unbelievably tired and my muscles were exhausted and I don’t know why… our relay did well though.”
Senior Sean Woods seconded his teammate Kamon about the regionals. “Regionals were great. It gave us a chance to see how we stacked up against all the schools in our county,” said Woods.
Being a swimmer on the team since his freshmen year gave Woods tons of experience and memorable moments. “It’s really sad that this is my last year, but I had a lot of fun and it was a great experience!”
On Tuesday, February 23rd, the County Championship was held. Qualified swimmers and teams met on Saturday, February 27th at the University of Maryland College Park’s Eppley Recreation Center for the State Championships.
