Track Continues Its Run To Glory

Track and field, an all-year sport, continues with the outdoor portion for the spring season. Oxon Hill High School’s track team has won many counties, regionals, states, and other championships in past seasons.
The team’s head coach is Rick Williams. He has coached for many years and has been with many of the runners since their beginnings of track running.
“I’m pretty confident that we’ll do well this year, but it sucks because States is around the time of graduation and that’ll be the end of track,” says senior Evann Slaughter.
About half of the team consists of seniors who have run track sincetheir freshmen year. Having earned many medals and trophies, these seniors have came a long way. These seniors include:
Deseree King
Evann Slaughter
Taylor Butler
Shanel Deal
Practice is every day from the end of the school day until 6 or 7 p.m. Practice involves stretching, warm-up drills, laps, more drills, and more laps.
“By the end of every practice everyone is sore and tired, but it’s worth it,” says sophomore Anthony Wills.
Runners practice for speed and endurance. The running events consist of the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, and 3200 meter runs and hurdles. The field events comprises of high jump, long jump, triple jump, and shot put.
