Spanish Honor Society

It is evident that students are unaware of the many clubs and organizations that Oxon Hill has to offer. Sports clubs are usually advertised. However, there’s more. For example, there are various academic student organizations such as the National Spanish Honor Society.

The Spanish Honor Society, sponsored by Ms. Bitondo, only has four active members. They usually meet once a month in Ms. Bitondo’s room. Because of the shortage in members, the Spanish Honor Society is not able to fully take major actions.

So what does it take to get into the Spanish Honor Society? First you must be enrolled in Spanish 4 or higher. This allows you to be a candidate for the application. You must fill out the application, which requires a 100 word essay written in Spanish explaining how you can contribute to the organization. A letter of recommendation is also required. Finally you just have to hope that you are selected to be a member.

The main focus of the Spanish Honor Society is to bring cultural awareness to the Oxon Hill High School community. The Society works with other National Honor Societies in Oxon Hill, such as the French and Latin Honor Societies, to fulfill their goal. International and culture night are the main events sponsored by the honor societies.

Being a member has a lot of perks. It acts a good resume filler, but in addition, you are able to experience the Spanish culture. Being in the society gives responsibilities; you get the opportunity to help other students by tutoring in Spanish classes. So now that you know, why don’t you try to apply?
