This year the Oxon Hill Drill Teams have been on a roll, sweeping all the competitions. The Armed teams known as Ladies of Vengeance (LOV), which is the girls, and Lords of Discipline (LOD), which is the boys, and the Unarmed Team known as Blue Guard have improved tremendously over the last three years. “As a member of Blue Guard Drill Team, I am proud to see things turning around for the better,” states Christian Canada, a senior on the team.
They began to make this transformation in the 2008-2009 school year and it’s continuing into 2009-2010. A big part of this change has to do with the dedicated young men and women who come to practice 3 to 4 days out of a week to train. It’s a lot of hard work, but they enjoy it. “Drill team can be hard at times, but what sport is not? And you get to compete and make memories with all the new people you meet on drill team,” states sophomore, Jasmine Arguijo. With the seniors leaving and the year almost over, they want to continue to move up and get better and stronger.
As they wind down on the school year, they have two competitions left: one competition at Forestville Military Academy on March 6, 2010, and then one in Florida. All of the competitions during the school year prepare them for Florida Nationals. Florida Nationals is the best of the best drill teams competing to become the champions. Last year, Blue Guard Drill team placed 2nd in an exhibition at Florida Nationals.
