March 4th  marks the release of third quarter progress reports, performance during  third quarter is essential in dictating eligibility of current juniors for induction into the National Honor Society (NHS). As third quarter comes closer to an end, NHS plans to disperse applications to those qualified juniors achieving a 3.5 minimum GPA.

The National Honor Society is an exclusive association whose membership includes the crème de la crème of achievers in Oxon Hill High School. The purpose of the NHS is to provide assistance to every student in order to achieve the unachievable. Admission into the Oxon Hill Chapter of NHS requires more than just honor roll.

Acceptance into the NHS is limited, requiring a nomination to be eligible to join. Members must exhibit character, leadership, scholarship, and service. The council evaluates each student by the types of community service, membership in extracurricular activities, leadership demonstrated in extracurricular activities, and awards received. The council only reviews activity done throughout candidate’s high school career.

Recent NHS activities include organizing the February 26th Honor Roll Assemblies for first and second quarters, and tutoring in all subjects Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Last year, the organization took part in such community service initiatives as children’s book drives and environmental clean up of the Chesapeake Bay. NHS plans to read to children at local libraries in the near future.

NHS officers include the following: President Sabrina Watson, Vice President Cortney McCoy, Secretary Isha Somerville, Treasurer Carina Arboleda, and Parliamentarian Xenelle Rabara. Sponsors are Ms. Sheehan and Ms. Bitondo. Meetings are held every other Wednesday morning at 8:30 AM in one of the sponsors’ rooms.

Although the organization is composed of seniors, juniors are inducted towards the end of their junior following the release of third quarter grades. The next round of applications is distributed during the end of the school year to induct rising seniors. Once inducted into the NHS, students are expected to maintain a 3.5 GPA. The sponsors stress the importance of demonstrating hard work from the beginning; students who want to join NHS must begin in the 9th grade.
