Team Dynamite, Oxon Hill’s robotics team, is a fairly new addition to the school’s ever-growing list of extracurricular activities, established during the 2008-2009 school year. Sponsored by Mrs. Pearson and strongly supported by alumni parent Mrs. Lewis, the team is comprised of a wide array of students including those from diverse backgrounds and all grade levels.

Last year, the robotics team was formed when the school received a $6,000 NASA grant to start a club. Mrs. Pearson took advantage of that opportunity and started what is now Team Dynamite. She recommended Raashid Bell to lead the team. Mrs. Lewis brought in new mentors as motivation, members were recruited and Team Dynamite was born. In the team’s first year, they competed in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, better known as FIRST, Robotics Competition where they won the Inspiration Award.

With the confidence boost from last year’s rookie win, they have come a long way.

Their meetings, which are held Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, are all business. Team Dynamite is broken into five subgroups: business, programming, build, electronics and web design and within each of the subgroups, there is a leader.  At the last meeting someone from Capitol College was in attendance assisting the various groups with their tasks. In addition to the sponsors from small, privately owned organizations, mentors from the Navy also lend their help to the team. The next competition is at the Washington DC Convention Center from Thursday, March 4 – Saturday, March 6.
