A night dedicated to giving Oxon Hill High School students not only a glimpse, but even a taste of the cultures of the world.
International Night is hosted by OHHS International Club and the teachers of the Foreign Language Departments. Student organization-sponsors include French Honor Society, Italian Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Anime Club, and the Filipino American Youth Association (FAYA).
Each organization prepares a food sampling of representative dishes from their culture, as well as a performance. Attendees have the opportunity to be serenaded in Spanish, or watch a dance incorporating the various cultures, and interact in the Tinikling (the national dance of the Philippines traditionally performed with two bamboo sticks).
Students have the opportunity to taste exotic flavors ranging from French quiche (a typeof pie containing an egg custard) to Italian spaghetti and meatballs to Filipino pancit (noodles with a mixture of vegetables and meat).
For freshmen and sophomores, International Night is an event never before witnessed. The last International Night was two years ago, during the Japanese exchange student program. The annual event did not happen last year due to the complications with new food handling rules and receiving approval. Thanks to the persistence of the International Club, led by President Talaya Heard, International Night became possible this year.
The festivities begin after school Tuesday, March 23rd, at 6 PM and last till 8:30 PM.
Only two hundred tickets will be sold. Although parents and family are welcome to attend the event, those who do not attend Oxon Hill HS are not. Tickets will be sold for five dollars each on Monday and Tuesday. Tickets can be purchased by seeing either Ms. Bitondo or Ms. Sheehan. Tickets will also be sold at the door for seven dollars.
