The Final Peak For College Summit

College Summit is a college preparatory course offered here at Oxon Hill and at other school in the county for the very last time this 2009-2010 school year due to county-wide budget cuts. The class, taught by Mrs. Starks here at OHHS, gave seniors planning to attend college the assistance and all the how-to’s on the entire college application process, including application essays, SAT and ACT information, deadlines and so forth.
The class was found very useful by some students, but for others, the class was taken too late. Rather than being exclusive to seniors, “it should have been offered to juniors and sophomores,” according to Dr. Hite, Prince George’s County Public Schools Superintendent. He was not the only individual who felt the class was not useful.
When asked about the College Summit Class junior Deborah Goddard stated, “What is the point of taking a class to get you ready you for college applications when the applications are already due during the time you’re taking the class?”
Sergeant Johnson, 2012 class sponsor, answered the question with a similar approach. “A college prep class taken in the twelfth grade is taken too late.” he said.
For some, the class was very valuable. Class of 2009 graduate and Delaware State University student, Jadira Green, said “The class helped get me here and Ms. Starks was a great teacher.”
The $100 million budget cut administered by the county affected many different areas, but the school system took the biggest hit. Classes, activities and teachers alike were cut for the upcoming school years.
