March 7, 2010 was an important night in the movie industry, as the Kodak Theater hosted the 82nd annual Academy Awards. The awards honor the biggest achievements in the film industry. It honors directors, actors, and writers, makeup artist, music composers, all the way to costume designers. If it played an important part in the film, it was recognized. Like always the award show was filled with celebrities, glamour, and nerves as they all waited to see who will get an Oscar statuette.
The award show was hosted by actors Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin who brought their comedy bits to entertain the audience and viewers at home. The nominees were the biggest names in film for 2009. Movies like Avatar, the Hurt Locker, the Blind Side, were all in the run for best picture. People believed that Avatar would take home the Oscar but it was the Hurt Locker that took the Oscar for best film. But that wasn’t the only one it took, in fact it took home a total 6 wins in the categories of Best Original Screenplay, Best Sound Editing and Mixing, Best Film Editing, and Best Director, which was won by Kathryn Bigelow making her the first woman to win in this category. But the Hurt Locker wasn’t the only film victorious. Films like Precious had two wins, along with Crazy Heart, and the animated film Up. Avatar didn’t disappoint either, as it took home 3 awards.
But films weren’t the only ones who got their sets of awards actors and actresses also had their shining moments. Christoph Waltz won best supporting actor for his role in Inglorious Basterds. Mo’Nique had won best supporting actress for the film Precious. Sandra Bullock received Best Actress for her role in the Blind Side and Jeff Bridges won the award for best actor for his role in Crazy Heart. Acceptance speeches were given out like always and one of them which will be remembered is when Sandra Bullock thanked her mom for “not letting me ride in cars with boys until I was 18, because she’s right, I would have done what she said I was gonna do.”
Young Hollywood played their role in the award show. They presented awards and honored movie stars who are no longer making films. Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Jon Cryer, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, Matthew Broderick, and Macaulay Culkin joined together onstage in a tribute to the director John Hughes, who passed away last year. Miley Cyrus made an appearance with Amanda Seyfried to present the Oscar for Best Original Song, which was given to “The Weary Kind,” from the film Crazy Heart. The night celebrated Hollywood’s achievements and it everyone seemed delighted. Now we will just see what the 2011 Academy Awards will bring.
